Searching for research data

Searching for research data In-Person

Place: You will get an outlook invitation with room number before the course

Have you ever had trouble finding and accessing research data that might have been relevant in your own research project?

Searching for data for use in research can be challenging, as datasets are not – as of yet – indexed systematically in academic databases such as Web of Science and Scopus. Often, datasets can also lack sufficient bibliographic and other metadata, making it difficult to assess the quality and relevance for a particular research project. Sometimes, it might also be relevant to look for data, which have been created or collected for other purposes than research.

This workshop introduces participants to strategies and methods to find research data in repositories, bibliographic databases and elsewhere. The workshop is organised as an interactive workshop, allowing time for participants to begin searching for data for their own research projects. A list of cases will be provided as an alternative for those who prefer this option.

Learning objectives
Upon completion of the workshop, it is intended that participants will have:

  • Knowledge of different search strategies and methods for searching for data
  • Knowledge of how to assess research data and potential conditions for reuse
  • Skills to find and navigate relevant research data repositories
  • Skills to apply search engines and bibliographic databases in data search
  • Knowledge of how to document findings.

Form and duration
3 hour workshop. The workshop consists of a combination of presentations and hands-on exercises. As part of the exercises, participants are encouraged to use their own research project as point of departure.

Target Group
Researchers incl. PhD students.

Teaching Language
The default language of instruction is English; however, the workshop can be conducted in Danish if all participants prefer. Group work can be carried out in both English and Danish, ensuring a comfortable and inclusive learning environment.
