Qualitative data analysis with NVivo In-Person
Place: You will get an outlook invitation with room number before the course
This course is an introduction to the qualitative analysis software NVivo.
NVivo can be used to analyze multiple data sources, such as interview transcripts, surveys, videos, images and literature. NVivo allows you to code and analyze materials by comparing codes and assigned metadata. The aim of the course is to take you through the process of importing data, preparing data for analysis and carrying out the actual analysis.
NVivo is developed for Windows, and not all functionalities are available in the Mac-version. Some support will be provided for Mac-users, but the course is based on NVivo 14 Pro for Windows.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of the course, it is expected that participants will:
- Have general knowledge of NVivo software and how it can be used for analysis
- Be able to import various data formats into NVivo
- Be capable of assigning metadata to data (case-classifications)
- Have the ability to perform coding for themes in texts (automated and manually)
- Be reasonably proficient in conducting analysis that combine coded themes and assigned metadata (e.g. crosstabs and matrix queries)
Target group
Researchers and PhD students.
Form and duration
The course is 4 hours and built up with presentations as well as practical exercises. The participants will work with exercise material provided at the course or alternatively are welcome to bring their own material.
Preparation
Please make sure to install NVivo before the course. Participants from RUC can install NVivo from serviceportalen.ruc.dk. Under the box “IT- and digital services” click on “Free software”, and then click on “Statistics program”. Here you will find a link to install NVivo.
Participants not related to RUC need to get NVivo either through their institution or from Lumivero (https://www.lumivo.com/).
You can still participate in the course if you have another version than NVivo 14, but some things will be different.
ECTS
Please note that no ECTS is awarded.
Teaching language
By default, the workshop is in English. However, it can be held in Danish if so wished by all participants. Group work can be in both English and Danish.
