Research data management and the FAIR principles in Open Science In-Person

Open Science and the FAIR principles are increasingly being regarded as part of good research practices. The FAIR principles aim to make your research data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. This course will explain what it requires to achieve good research data management, it will introduce the main concepts of Open Science and what it entails to implement the FAIR principles in a research project. Participants will discuss the possible benefits and barriers in sharing research data and gain knowledge of what FAIR can mean in their research project.
Learnings objectives
After completion of the course, the participants are expected to:
• Assess the challenges in managing research data
• Be able to make a Data Management Plan (DMP)
• Place the FAIR principles within the broader Open Science agenda
• Understand how to implement the FAIR principles to make research data more visible
Form and duration
From 9:00 - 13:30 hours including lunch. The course consists of a combination of lectures, discussions and exercises. There will be a general introduction in the morning, followed by presentations targeted SSH and STEM participants in the afternoon. It is expected that participants prepare a DMP prior to the course. DMPs will be used as point of departure during the course but won’t be visible to the other participants.
Target group
The course is mandatory for PhD students at Roskilde University enrolled from 2022 and on-wards. However, all PhD students are encouraged to take the course. Other early career and senior researchers are welcome to participate. Max no. of participants 30.
ECTS
½ ECTS is awarded to PhD students by presenting a completed DMP.
Prerequisites
A Moodle course page will be created where participants are expected to check the schedule, literature references, and guidelines in relation to the course. Participants must submit a DMP in Moodle (via dmp.deic.dk), no later than 3 days before the course date. Participants receive a guideline to DeiC DMP after registration.
Language
By default, the course is in English. However, it can be held in Danish if so wished by all participants. Group work can be in both English and Danish.
